back to work

I'm back in the office again. Funny how after the initial "welcome back" greetings it feels like I never left. Except that I'm struggling to remember all my current passwords for everything (might just have our IT lady reset it all -- my brain is still mush).

Now, I realize I have a fabulous job, for the most part. I work for a great guy, I like (most of) my coworkers, and I have a (somewhat) flexible schedule (depends on the week, time of year). It's probably the most family-friendly full-time job in D.C. But it doesn't make me miss my babies any less.

As I dropped off my sweet little Pierce with a dear friend last week, I was an emotional wreck. I had secretly (okay, maybe not so secretly) been dreading the moment when I'd have to say good-bye -- and leave him for 10 or so hours to smile and cuddle and coo with someone else. In fact, I'd been living in denial that the day would even arrive. I thought as little as I could about it. But suddenly it was upon me and it was time for me to bite my lip, wipe my tears and go.

Being a working mom is hard. Really hard. But being on maternity leave for 12 weeks reminded me that being a stay-at-home mom is hard too. Both have their pros and cons, which I'd love to get into in another post. But for now, I'm just not going to think about it.

Snapped at the end of my first day back at work. {Sigh}

valentine's day

Christian and I had some fun making hearts out of crayons on Valentine's Day. What's not to like about breaking crayons on purpose?

He was pretty excited to hand them out to his pals at play school the next day. (We more or less followed this tutorial. Heart mold is from Ikea.)

Lessons learned:

 1) Either use a different can each time for your different colors or, at the very least, melt your lighter colors first (otherwise your yellow-orange will be burnt orange).

 2) Don't grab can from pan with an oven mitt you actually care about.

blessing day

Our sweet Pierce was given a name and a blessing last week at church (for friends and associates unfamiliar with LDS ordinances, you can find more info here).

Not only was Pierce's name added to the records of the church, Shane was also able to give him a blessing from his Heavenly Father. A sweet peacefulness settled over me as I heard Shane emphasize that Pierce would be a witness of Jesus Christ, sharing the gospel through word and deed. It was a powerful reminder that I have a responsibility to raise both of our boys in love and righteousness and with firm testimonies of their Savior and His Atonement so they realize their full potential. I'm in awe of the explosion of love I feel for both Christian and Pierce and I'm so grateful their sweet spirits are
entrusted to our care.
Yes, Pierce has his Dad's hair. For now. ;)
(I'm sad we had to take these photos indoors but it was FREEZING outside!)
Aunt Janny made it out for the big day. We were so glad to have her.
I just love Pierce's expressions and how he loves to clasp his hands.

My cousin Domineau made the trek from Pentagon City for the occasion as well. So glad she did.

my new goal...& roasted tomato basil soup

One of my goals this year is to try one new recipe a week. I know that might sound silly to some of you out there but cooking something new during the week when you're a mom who works full time is no small feat. By the time you fight traffic, pick up your kid(s) at the babysitter's and climb the steps to your apartment (lugging your bag, plus your kids' bags, plus your kids), you don't normally want to spend another hour or more cooking. Because by then, your kids are usually cranky and so are you.

But, I love (good) food and I want to get better at making it. So here we go. I gave myself a bit of a pass these first few weeks because of our new little Pierce but now that he's two months old I'm running out of excuses.

I figure I can report back on the blog as to how things went. That way you too can expand your dinner menus to include some new vegetarian dishes.

One of my favorite blogs for simple vegetarian finds is Two Peas & Their Pod. They keep their recipes simple, so you don't usually need some random special ingredients. Maybe I can relate to them because the wife is vegetarian, but the husband is not.

My mother and I tried out their soup while she was in town and I made it again this week (so yes, I'm cheating because this is not really the first time I've had it -- but, it's the first time I've made it completely on my own). Even Shane likes this soup, and that's saying something because Shane is not a soup guy.

Here's the recipe. It makes a lot (at least for our little fam) so half of it can easily be put into the freezer and reused down the road. The key is definitely in the roasted tomatoes so don't cheat yourself there. It's really great with a crispy panini or some fresh french bread for dipping.

Roasted Tomato Basil Soup
Yield: Serves 4-6
2 1/2 pounds Roma tomatoes, cut in half lengthwise

4 tablespoons olive oil, divided

Salt and pepper, to taste, for seasoning tomatoes
1 medium onion, chopped
4 cloves of garlic, minced
Dash of red pepper flakes
1 cup freshly chopped basil
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes
4 cups vegetable broth (you can use chicken broth)
Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spread the tomatoes on a baking sheet and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and roast for about 45 minutes.
2. In a large stockpot, heat the other 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until tender, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add the canned tomatoes, fresh basil, and vegetable broth. Stir in the oven roasted tomatoes. Cook for about 30 minutes over medium-low heat.
3. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup in the stockpot, or transfer soup to a food processor or blender to blend. The soup should be smooth, with a few tomato chunks. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and serve warm.

two months old (updated)

Since I originally posted this Pierce had his two-month doctor's appointment. He weighed in at 12 lbs. (55th percentile) even and 23 3/4 inches long (75th percentile). Christian was heavier and not quite as long at this point. Still, they seem to be on similar growth tracks.

Today this little guy hit the two-month mark and I found a few minutes to snap some pictures. Ever since he passed six weeks he's been more and more smiley and responsive -- we love it! He still sleeps quite a bit but not between every feeding like he used to. He generally gives me a 4-5 hour stretch at night, right now it usually falls between 9 or 10pm to 2 or 3am. Then he'll feed again around 5:30 and go back down till 7 or 8. Not bad. Although I can't really remember how well Christian was doing at this point.

me & the boys

The boys and I have spent a lot of time together over this three-day weekend while Shane is back on the "study-whenever-I'm-not-at-work" bandwagon (a stage in life I was hoping we were past but, alas, we're not there just yet).

He's planning to take the California bar next month. No, we don't have a job offer there, we're just doing our best to open up the possibilities as we pray for the Lord to provide an answer. However, if you have any leads or suggestions, feel free to share. ;)

I especially love the final series of these photos because you can see Christian jumping on the couch, clearly over the thrill of using Photo Booth on my computer.

new little cousin

The boys got a new cousin today.

Little Hallie entered the world early this morning, six weeks early. She's got a lot of tubes in her right now but both she and mama (Shane's sister, Kayla) are doing well. She weighed in at 5 lbs. and is about 18.5 inches long.

We're excited to meet her via webcam later this week.

farewell, dear jetta

On Monday, Shane's 2000 Volkswagon Jetta was toted off to its final resting place. Christian seemed the most affected by the loss but don't be fooled, we'll all miss that little red car.

It was Shane's first major post-mission purchase, even if he did buy it used. It was in that car that Shane and I became friends as he'd take me to get some groceries or give me a ride to institute since I car-less in those days. When we started dating that car took us on numerous day trips and outings. It was in that car that Shane first told me he loved me, and where we broke up twice before swallowing our pride and deciding to tie the knot. It was in that car that we carpooled to work when we both had jobs on Capitol Hill at the start of our marriage. It was the often the highlight of our day, the only time we had for real conversations because Shane would work all day and go to class at night.

It was also in that car that Shane and two friends got stranded on the way home from taking (and passing) the Virginia bar this past summer and where Shane, Christian and I coasted off and on for over 50 miles to get it to a dealership when it was overheating in 110-plus degree weather.

Still, that car took Shane across the country five times and got him through four years of law school.

She really was a champ, that little red car.

six weeks

Today...Pierce hit the six-week mark. Where did the time go?

And Christian enjoyed the first real "snow day" of 2012.
